Global Outreach is doing so much incredible work here in Uganda. Last week, a lightning strike took out a ton of gear (including some of the macs from the previous post) and it took out Global’s office server as well. That’s when they called us.

We broke it down and found that the strike went through a regulator, surge suppressor, and chewed through not only the power supply and CPU but nailed the hard drive as well. I called and asked if they had a backup. They didn’t. And the machine had all their financial information on it. It was a horrible, painful call. In the end, it meant a few days of really nasty data recovery.

This type of thing hardly ever goes wel, but I had a few tricks up my sleeve thanks to a few years working for a little forensics group.

Eventually, we were able to recover ALL their data. It doesn’t always work out that way, but in this case, I was able to make the “hero phone call”. It was one of those jobs that reminded me why I was here.
